The Historic and Monumental area of the Alhambra is the product of a collective conception of space, which was able to order the references and elements common among all scales of the territory, urban and architectural. It corresponds to an unrepeatable situation in the history of mankind, and for this reason has been preserved as a World Heritage Site.
The character of the problems affecting the Alhambra, as “urban space” or singular “citadel” that dialogues with the “other” city of Granada, as well as its portentous synthetic condition of geography, urban and architectural, led to This Plan along the path of disciplinary integration. Beyond its concrete aims, this Plan of the Alhambra would serve to banish any unidimensional vision of the Monument: neither archaeological nor urbanistic nor architectural action … would be able to understand and recreate its character with autonomy. The rationalization of its current tourist uses, the pedestrianization of its spaces creating the new South Access in substitution of its previous accesses of Cuesta Gomerez, the rehabilitation of its architectural elements and public spaces, the adaptation and protection of its perimeter spaces with the city of Granada were his main interventions. (It was National Prize of Urbanism in 1987, granted by the Ministry of Public Works.
